Spring Newsletter (2022)

Greetings from the Officers of your Council!

These last two year have brought many challenges to our nation, or communities, and our families.  During 2021 and the first few months of 2022 we had to curtailed many of our normal activities, as did our supported Marine units across the state.  But as COVID concerns diminish and we return to more normal conditions, we are looking to the future and have seen a significant increase in activities among our Marine units and supported organizations.

So far this year, we have supported the Ft Sill MARDET with their annual family day event and assisting Fox BTRY 2/14 with a pre-deployment “mess night” and family departure day gathering as the unit  is mobilized for a six-month deployment to Okinawa as part of the Unit Deployment Program (UDP).  As for the Coordinating Council, we to are getting back to business.  We recently conducted our normal board of directors meeting, face to face, during March and will host our normal Annual Members Meeting on April 21st as discussed earlier. Additionally, we will conduct our annual birthday lunch on 4 November.

Even with these challenges over the last two year, the Council has continued our long history of supporting the Marine community.  We did change our efforts from supporting the large activities such as family days and birthday balls to supporting smaller events and recognizing individual achievements.  When the Fort Sill MARDET had to cancel its annual Birthday ball for the second year in a row, the council helped sponsor an outdoor birthday celebration for the students and staff.  During 2021, we continue to sponsor shooting events for our Marine JROTC programs and partnered with several veteran groups to raise funding for Sapulpa JROTC program to build a drill hall.  We have continued to sponsor various awards that recognize superior performance, such as the Community Service, Marine and NCO of the year and recognition awards for our top recruiters from the Recruiting Station (RS).

Our biggest event of the year is always our annual Marine Corps Birthday luncheon. Last year we were able to present the luncheon and were honored to have LtCol Ryan Cohen, former CO of our Oklahoma City RS, who many of you know, as our Guest of Honor.   This year’s luncheon will be held on Friday, the 4th of November 2022, at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club located at 7000 NW Grand Blvd, Nichols Hills (same location as last year). We have not yet locked down or guest speaker but are looking for a leader who can tell us about the many changes occurring in the Marine Corps as our Commandant reshapes the Marine Corps to return to our Naval roots and prepare for conflicts in the Pacific,  More details will follow as we get closer to the day, but I can assure you that we will do our best to honor our Marine Corps and Marines during this the event.

Over the years we have been very fortunate to have very generous sponsors who have made our efforts possible; BancFirst, the Copeland family, Arvest Bank and Tinker Federal Credit Union to mention only a few.  As we get back to a more normal operational tempo we will continue to need the support of our members and I encourage you all consider supporting our Council Donor/Sponsorship Program.
