August, 2013 Newsletter

Time for another update on the Council’s activities.   Summers are getting shorter and football season is here – great time of year and things are going well within the Council.  Our Spring annual meeting was held on 18 April at the Gaillardia Country Club for the first time and we had a total of 49 members and guests who enjoyed the hospitality provided by the staff.  The Council officers use the annual meeting each Spring to provide updates and plans to council members.  We encourage everyone to try to get to these meetings.

As you know we rotate members of the Board during the Spring and we added Phil Norton to the Board to serve a three year term.  Phil replaces Bruce Day – a charter member of the Board and someone who has been instrumental in the successes of the Council.  We sincerely appreciate all of the support provided by Bruce during his extended time on the Board.  Marty McKnight and Pete Sawin remain on the Board with new three year terms.  All of the Board members are honored to serve you and look forward to the continued success and growth of the Council.  We also recognized Joe Ihle, John Henry Mashunkashey, and Jim Umbenhower as newly joined members of the Council.  Since our annual meeting last April the Council has added the following new members:

The Council continues to support Oklahoma Marines in a variety of ways that have proven successful over the past few years.  While we always address the individual requests from units / organizations for support as they occur, we continue to support the Oklahoma City & Broken Arrow Reserve Unit Community Service Awards;  Marine Corps League “Marine of the Year” Ruger pistol award; Fort Sill’s Devil Dog Run trophies and medallions; season tickets for Thunder games;  and the annual Marine Corps Birthday Luncheon.  We have been blessed with the continued and increasing support from our sponsors that allow for these types of activities.

We have scheduled this year’s annual Marine Corps Birthday luncheon is set for Friday – 1 November 2013.  We will be having the luncheon at the Northwest Expressway Marriott at 3233 Northwest Expressway, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73112 the same location as last year.  The Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps – Micheal Barrett - has accepted our invitation to serve as our Guest of Honor and Guest Speaker and we are expecting a great crowd.  Be sure to put this date on your calendar and invite your friends to join us at this great annual event.   We will have another custom designed coin for this year.  Be looking for your invitation – hope to see you there.

We would like each of you to know that while your Council Board works very hard to accomplish our Council’s objectives, we never forget that whatever success we have is absolutely dependent upon your generous and continued support.

Once a Marine, always a Marine.

Semper Fidelis,

Phil E. Hughes
President
